Quilt dated 1848

Flag Day commemorates the adoption of a continental flag by the Second Continental Congress, June 14, 1777.

Commemorations began in the 1870s around the centennial of the anniversary.

During World War I President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation designating June 14th as flag day.

This looks "backwards" to us, but it isn't until the early 20th century that rules for displaying the flag were issued.

The 1777 proclamation read

"Resolved, that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation."
